What is Afro-Bieb
The Afro-Bieb project is one of the core activities of the AIMIRO Mediahuis foundation. The main objective of Afro-Bieb is to provide a platform where people can learn about African literature, culture, and languages. It is also a place where people with an African background or interest in the aforementioned themes can meet. Mutual understanding through connection, sharing stories, and knowledge are central to this.
Mission
The Afro-Bieb is a multidisciplinary center for African art, culture, language, and literature where knowledge about African cultures, literature, and languages can be gained, but it is also a place where people with an African background or interest in the aforementioned themes can meet, with mutual understanding through connections, sharing stories, and knowledge being central. In addition to an extensive book collection, the Afro-Bieb also offers language lessons, book translations, and intercultural programming for the public.
Objectives
- Creating empowerment, representation, and inspiration by presenting new and undiscovered stories about African cultures and history.
- Promoting identity development among people with a (partially) African background in the Netherlands.
- Providing a platform for role models and young, creative makers of literary art with a (partially) African background.
- Creating encounters between people with a (partially) African background and/or people with an interest in the African continent.
- Strengthening social cohesion and mutual understanding by creating mutual contact, sharing new stories and historical knowledge and information.
- Translating African fiction and non-fiction to Dutch.
Added value
When we think of Africa, we see a vast and diverse cultural landscape that is often lumped together by outsiders into “African culture.” This label is inaccurate (since such a thing does not exist) and is also problematic because it obscures the diversity of cultures, languages, and histories, as well as the distinct African nations and peoples. More painfully, it also hinders understanding of the intrinsic cultural development of the various peoples on the African continent itself.
However, “Africa” is playing an increasingly prominent role in public discourse, including in the Netherlands. This is partly due to the shared history of slavery and colonial rule, which must be unentangled. Partly due to the resistance of African countries and peoples against the one-sided image of deprivation and dependence, as if Africa, as a continent, could not contribute to solutions in the economy and well-being on its own, nor possess its own independent cultural and intellectual production. Everywhere, and certainly in Amsterdam as well, more and more young writers, poets, cabaret artists, spoken-word performers, hip-hop artists, and screenwriters are giving voice to their place in society.
Through a literary and educational program (café), we aim to collaborate with the emerging generation of writers, poets, and other literary talents of African descent to showcase the diversity of peoples, cultures, and languages on the African continent and to raise awareness and historical understanding of this diversity, starting with a number of widely spoken languages. Partly by reflecting on those images, but also by creating counter-images based on a more distinctive cultural, political-philosophical, and historical perspective.
Wat is Afro-Bieb

Hoofddoel van de Afro-Bieb is een platform te bieden waar kennis kan worden opgedaan over Afrikaanse literatuur, cultuur en talen. Daarnaast is het een plek waar mensen met een Afrikaanse achtergrond of interesse in voornoemde thema's elkaar kunnen ontmoeten. Wederzijds begrip door verbinding, het delen van verhalen en kennis staan centraal.
Missie
De Afro-Bieb is een multidisciplinair centrum voor Afrikaanse kunst, cultuur, taal en literatuur waar kennis opgedaan kan worden omtrent Afrikaanse culturen, literatuur en talen, maar het is ook een plek waar mensen met een Afrikaanse achtergrond of interesse in voornoemde thema's elkaar kunnen ontmoeten waarbij wederzijds begrip door verbindingen, het delen van verhalen en kennis centraal staat. De Afro-Bieb biedt naast een uitgebreide boekencollectie ook taallessen, boekvertalingen en een interculturele programmering voor publiek aan.
Doelstellingen
- Creëren van empowerment, representatie en inspiratie door het presenteren van nieuwe en onontdekte verhalen over Afrikaanse culturen en geschiedenis.
- Bevorderen van identiteitsontwikkeling onder mensen met een (deels) Afrikaanse achtergrond in Nederland.
- Podium bieden aan rolmodellen en jonge en creatieve makers van literaire kunst met een (deels) Afrikaanse achtergrond.
- Het creëren van ontmoeting tussen mensen met een (deels) Afrikaanse achtergrond en/of mensen met interesse in het Afrikaanse continent.
- Versterken van sociale cohesie en onderling begrip via het creëren van onderling contact, delen van nieuwe verhalen en historische kennis en informatie.
- Vertalen van Afrikaanse fictie en non-fictie in het Nederlands.
Toegevoegde waarde
Denkend aan Afrika, zien we een continentaal en divers cultuurgebied dat door derden vaak wordt samengebundeld tot ‘De Afrikaanse cultuur’. Die betiteling is onjuist (want deze bestaat niet) en schept ook ongenoegen omdat deze het zicht wegneemt van de diversiteit aan culturen, talen en geschiedenis en van de onderscheidende Afrikaanse landen en volkeren. En pijnlijker, het belemmert ook het inzicht in de intrinsieke culturele ontwikkeling van de verschillende volkeren op het continent Afrika zelf.
Wel neemt ‘Afrika’ in het publieke debat, ook in Nederland, een steeds grotere plaats in. Deels door de gedeelde geschiedenis van slavernij en koloniale overheersing, die ontvlecht moet worden. Deels door het verzet van Afrikaanse landen en volkeren tegen het eenzijdige beeld van achterstelling en afhankelijkheid, alsof Afrika op zichzelf als continent niet zou kunnen bijdragen aan oplossingen in economie en welzijn en ook geen eigenstandige cultuur- en kennisproductie zou kennen. Overal en zeker ook in Amsterdam, geven steeds meer jonge schrijvers, dichters, kleinkunstenaars, vertolkers van het spoken-word, hiphop artiesten en scenaristen woorden aan hun plek in de samenleving.
Middels een literair- en educatieve programmering (café) willen we samen met de opkomende generatie schrijvers, dichters en ander literair talent met een Afrikaanse achtergrond de diversiteit aan volkeren, culturen en talen op het Afrikaanse continent laten zien en het bewustzijn en historisch besef hierover vergroten, te beginnen aan de hand van een aantal veel gesproken talen. Voor een deel door op die beelden te reflecteren, maar ook om tegenbeelden te creëren vanuit een meer onderscheidende cultuurinhoudelijke, politiek-filosofische en historische aard.
